I’ve been a little lax with the #EditorTherapy schedule since the beginning of the year, mostly because there’s just been so much going on.
We’ve had an abundance of breaking news on college campuses of the level that it’s also receiving national news coverage. That’s a complex way of saying that student media have covered some huge stories in January. I’ve scheduled a lot of student journalists as last-minute guests. Thank you for that!
Before we get to February’s chat schedule, I need to tell you about tonight’s #EditorTherapy.
JAN. 31 – COVERING NASSAR with Rachel Fradette and Madison O’Connor from The State News
Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor, was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison last week after more than 150 women and girls said he sexually abused them during the past two decades.
Student journalists from The State News, Michigan State University’s student newspaper, covered the Nassar case and its impact to date on their university community.
Join Rachel Fradette, editor-in-chief for The State News, and News Editor Madison O’Connor tonight as they chat with us about the experience of covering such a large sex abuse scandal, what they’ve learned and how it’s impacting their campus community.
Fradette and O’Connor will be tough acts to follow, but I have great plans! The following is the #EditorTherapy schedule for February, complete with information about guests.
FEB. 7 – COVERING TRUMP with Erin Gibson from Southern Indiana University
Columbia Journalism Review recently released an article, It’s time to rethink how we cover Trump. This got me thinking about how student media outlets are covering the president, if they are at all. If they aren’t, how should they be?
I’ve invited my favorite political reporting guru, Erin Gibson, to speak with us on the topic. Erin is a communications instructor and adviser to The Shield at the University of Southern Indiana.
FEB. 14 – SKIP A CHAT FOR VALENTINE’S DAY
Yes, I know you wanted to spend V-Day with fellow nerds, but it’s my son’s birthday, so you’ll have to plan your own nerdy gathering.
FEB. 21 – DISPLAYING TRANSPARENCY with Frank LoMonte from Student Press Law Center and the University of Florida
I’m reading more frequently about the need for transparency during the reporting process as a way to help our audiences feel confident in the validity of the information (aka: understand it’s not “fake news”).
Transparency is a topic near to Frank LoMonte’s heart, so I asked him to join us to chat about it.
If you don’t know Frank (Are there people who don’t know Frank?) you’ll want to “meet” him. Frank is the former executive director of Student Press Law Center and the director at the Brechner Center for Freedom of Information at the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications.
FEB. 28 – SKIP A CHAT FOR ASSOCIATED COLLEGIATE PRESS MIDWINTER CONVENTION IN LONG BEACH
I am attending the Associated Collegiate Press’s Midwinter National College Journalism Convention in Long Beach, so I won’t be available for this chat.
I’ll be speaking mostly on leadership while at the convention.
If you are there, please introduce yourself. No, it’s not weird. Trust me.
March 7 – Skip a chat for College Media Association Spring National Convention in New York City
I am attending the College Media Association Spring National Convention in New York City, so I won’t be available for this chat.
I am the vice president of College Media Association, so I won’t be presenting much at the convention, but I will be there are super present all week.
If you are at the convention, please introduce yourself. It’s still not weird. I promise.
Once I return from both conventions, the next #EditorTherapy will be full of student attendees telling us what they learned and sharing best tips.
There it is, your February #EditorTherapy schedule, with a little heads up for that first chat in March.
As always, your participation in Editor Therapy is critical. The chat cannot work without you, but I will continue hosting it as long as you show up.
Participating in Editor Therapy chat is as easy as logging onto Twitter at 9 p.m. CST Wednesdays and using the #EditorTherapy hashtag to join the conversation.
You also should join the #EditorTherapy Facebook group to discuss issues and concerns outside of the chat.
For more leadership information and chat recaps, like the #EditorTherapy Facebook page.
I hope to see you during the next #EditorTherapy!
